Students, faculty and community members celebrated the grand opening of Troy School District's new Smith Middle School building on Oct. 12, C&G Newspapers reported.

The building, at 5850 Livernois Road, is 120,000 square feet with a capacity of about 900 students, according to C&G. The project was part of the district's $555 million 2022 bond, with construction costs estimated at about $70 million, C&G reported. The district held a groundbreaking in May 2024, and Christine DiPilato, the district's assistant superintendent of secondary education, told C&G it was a two-year build.

The school is organized into six learning communities, two for each grade, C&G reported.

Principal Ryan Brinks said the building was "designed to prioritize evacuation in terms of a crisis situation," according to C&G.

Superintendent Richard Machesky, school board President Vital Anne and Troy Mayor Ethan Baker also spoke at the ceremony. Machesky told the crowd that students deserve the best the district can give them, C&G reported. Legislative Director Matt Dargay presented an official State of Michigan dedication on behalf of state Rep. Sharon MacDonnell, according to C&G.

What happens to the old building

The old Smith building at 5835 Donaldson Road will house Boulan Park Middle School students during the 2026-27 school year and Larson Middle School students in 2027-28 while those schools are renovated, according to C&G. After the Larson renovations, district spokesperson Alison Hendry told C&G, the old building will be demolished to make room for a football field and track.
