Royal Oak asks residents to weigh in on zoning ordinance rewrite; survey open through Nov. 9

Royal Oak is asking residents and other stakeholders to help shape a comprehensive rewrite of its zoning ordinance, the rules that set how property in the city can be used and developed, the Oakland County Times reported Wednesday, citing an Oct. 21 city announcement.
The city's new Master Plan, approved last year, found that the ordinance's structure and some of its content don't match the plan's vision, according to the city. The city also said the ordinance doesn't line up with current city initiatives, recent development or best practices. The goal is a code that is clearer, more objective, better organized and easier to navigate, the city said.
"We want to hear from people that reference the zoning ordinance," said Joseph Murphy, the city's director of planning.
How to weigh in
- An anonymous online survey takes about 10 minutes and is open through Monday, Nov. 9, at bit.ly/RO-ZO. The same link is the project's hub, with maps, timelines, meeting materials and ordinance drafts.
- Paper copies are available from the city's planning division at 248-246-3280.
- An interactive zoning district map is on the city's website at romi.gov/303/Zoning-District-Maps.
The announcement did not list public meeting dates for the rewrite.
