Birmingham Brother Rice knocked off No. 1 Novi Detroit Catholic Central 31-25 in overtime Saturday night, Oct. 24, at Ford Field, ending Catholic Central's 22-game winning streak, the longest active streak in Michigan.

Earlier in the day, Clarkston Everest Collegiate beat Royal Oak Shrine 34-7 to win the Catholic High School League's Cardinal championship.

Both games were part of the league's Prep Bowl LIV, the last weekend of the regular season. The Journal could not confirm either score in Saturday night's scoreboard.

Brother Rice 31, Catholic Central 25 (OT)

Brother Rice, ranked No. 19 going into the game, scored first and led 12-7 at halftime, the Detroit Free Press reported. The lead changed hands three times after that.

Junior running back Deondre Hill put Brother Rice ahead 25-22 with about a minute left. Catholic Central's Ty Goddard answered with a 42-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to force overtime, according to the Free Press.

In overtime, the Brother Rice defense stopped Catholic Central on two straight runs at the goal line. Hill then scored the winning touchdown.

Hill carried 25 times for 88 yards, according to The Bear Sports Network, which credited him with five touchdowns. The Free Press counted four. Sophomore receiver Christian Marshall had 190 receiving yards, The Bear Sports Network reported. His catch late in the game set Brother Rice up at the Catholic Central 1-yard line; the Free Press put it at 49 yards and called it the best game of his young career.

Catholic Central played without quarterback Duke Banta, who was out with a shoulder injury, according to The Bear Sports Network.

Coach Aaron Marshall told the Free Press his team "showed it tonight."

Everest 34, Shrine 7

Everest opened with an onside kick, recovered it and took a 3-0 lead on a 21-yard field goal by senior Charles Schmitt, Detroit Catholic reported. Everest led 20-0 at halftime.

The Mountaineers' scoring included a trick play early in the second quarter: sophomore Vince Pruchnicki took the snap, lateraled to senior running back Jim McGrath, then caught a touchdown pass from McGrath. Senior Michael Gaglio and sophomore Christian Knowlson added rushing touchdowns in the second half.

Shrine, which came in 8-0, scored late in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard pass from Nathan Maffucci to senior Owen Wisniewski.

Everest lost its opener and won its last eight games.
