Lyon Township residents on the public water system should soon notice softer water coming out of the tap.
The township's South Hill treatment plant is planned to begin softening water in the third week of October, according to a township announcement published by the Oakland County Times. The township's Woodwind plant has supplied softened water since 2023.
The South Hill plant was recently upgraded with softening equipment, and the township has received state approval, according to the announcement.
A few weeks of blended water
Softened water will go throughout the township's whole water system. While the plant starts up, water in the system will be a blend of softened and existing water. The township expects it to take three to four weeks for the plant to be fully online across the system.
The announcement did not give an exact start date.
No salt in the process
Both plants use a pellet reactor system that removes calcium hardness without salt. Calcium in the water crystallizes into small limestone pellets, according to the township.
What residents should do
The township is advising residents with in-home water softeners to contact their softener company to make sure the unit is set at the right level once the new water arrives.
Softer water should mean less scale buildup, less frequent regeneration for home softeners, and less money spent on salt, according to the township.
