Voters in four Oakland County communities will decide library funding questions on the Nov. 3 ballot, the Oakland Press reported. Two are new taxes, one is a renewal and one is a bond to expand a library.
One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of a property's taxable value.
Bloomfield Hills: renewal for Baldwin library access
Bloomfield Hills is asking voters to renew a levy of up to 0.52 mill to pay for residents' access to the Baldwin Public Library, according to the Oakland Press. The renewal would run six years, starting with the July 2027 levy, and raise about $440,405 in its first year, according to the county's official ballot language. The city levied 0.36 mill last year, the Oakland Press reported.
Lathrup Village: new millage for Southfield library contract
Lathrup Village is asking for a new 1-mill millage for five years, 2027 through 2031, to pay for its library services contract, according to the ballot language on the Oakland County Clerk's official proposal list. It would raise about $175,000 in its first year. The city contracts with the Southfield Public Library, the Oakland Press reported.
The request follows a failed Headlee override vote in November 2025, according to the Oakland Press. The Southfield contract requires 12 months' notice to cancel.
Lyon Township: larger levy as current millage expires
Lyon Township is asking for a new millage of up to 1.1 mills for 10 years, 2026 through 2035, according to the county's official ballot language. It would raise about $2.56 million in its first year.
The library's current 0.89-mill levy, approved in 2017, is expiring, the Oakland Press reported. State-required rollbacks have reduced it to 0.86 mill, which brought in about $1.9 million, according to the Oakland Press. The township puts the cost at about $286 a year on an average $520,000 home.
Orion Township: $13.3 million bond to expand the library
Orion Township is asking for a $13.3 million, 20-year bond to expand its 29,000-square-foot library on Joslyn Road, built in 1989, and add an outdoor learning and play area, the Oakland Press reported. The bond is estimated at 0.3116 mill, about 31 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, in 2027, according to the official ballot language.
The library's only operating money from taxpayers is a perpetual millage approved in 1996, now 1.313 mills after rollbacks, library director Chase McMunn told the Oakland Press.
