Students in Lake Orion and Oxford got an unexpected day off Tuesday, Oct. 13, after a fiber-optic line along M-24 was cut, according to the Lake Orion Review.

The damage knocked out internet service and other essential daily systems in both districts, the Review reported. Lake Orion Community Schools and Oxford Community Schools both canceled classes for the day.

Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Lake Orion also closed.

Overnight repair fell short

Lake Orion officials said they had hoped internet service would be restored overnight. A vendor attempted a repair, but the work would not be finished in time for the school day, according to the Review.

What isn't known yet

The districts have not said:

  • what caused the cut, or who owns the line
  • whether the closure will count against the number of days the state allows schools to cancel without making them up

The Journal had not confirmed as of Wednesday morning whether all systems were back to normal. Families should check district messages for updates.
