Ferndale Public Schools is reshuffling its buildings ahead of a multiyear renovation of its middle and high school — and the moves will force Royal Oak Township to find a new home for its municipal offices.

The moves

According to the district and the Oakland County Times:

  • Central administration will move from the Roosevelt building at 2610 Pinecrest Drive to the Tri-County Educational Center — the historic Ulysses S. Grant School — at 21131 Garden Lane in Royal Oak Township. Target: spring 2027.
  • Ferndale Middle School students will move into the vacated Roosevelt building as temporary space, targeted for summer 2027, before the 2027-28 school year.
  • The shared middle/high school building at 725 Pinecrest will undergo a renovation expected to take two and a half to three years. High school students will stay on site.

The work is part of the district's 2025 bond program. The district has not released cost figures for the moves.

"This is a real investment in both buildings," Superintendent Camille Hibbler said, according to the Oakland County Times.

Royal Oak Township

Royal Oak Township has had its municipal offices at the Tri-County Educational Center for more than 20 years and will relocate. Where the township's offices will go has not been announced.

The district held a virtual town hall on the plans Oct. 8. More information is on the district's transition plans page at ferndaleschools.org.
