Three people from Flint hired through Facebook Marketplace to clean out a Bloomfield Township home before an estate sale are charged after police say they took items from the house, WDIV reported Tuesday.
The home, on Dell Rose Drive, belonged to a homeowner who had died and was being staged for an estate sale, according to the station. The people running the sale hired the crew online.
What police say
Around 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, the person overseeing the property arrived and saw items from the home in the crew's vehicle, WDIV reported. The workers were still there when Bloomfield Township police arrived.
Police say the crew took items over two days, including propane tanks, antifreeze, liquor bottles, toiletries and a Blu-ray player. WDIV did not report a total value.
Officers searched the vehicle and found about 5 grams of suspected methamphetamine and 2 grams of suspected fentanyl, according to the station.
The charges
- Shawna Deann Stewart, 48: possession of methamphetamine, a 10-year felony, and receiving and concealing stolen property, a 93-day misdemeanor. Bond was set at $5,000 personal.
- Derek Donovan Rohner, 49: larceny in a building, a four-year felony. Bond was set at $7,500, 10%.
- Niakna Ashly Marie Russo, 30: possession of controlled substances, a four-year felony. Bond was set at $5,000 personal.
WDIV did not name the court.
Police spokesperson Officer Sean Manor told the station none of the three had a criminal history, and police have not tied them to other thefts. He said police would like to hear from anyone who believes they were a victim, and advised people hiring help online to "trust your gut."
A charge is an accusation, and each person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
